Self-Directed Gold IRA: How to Hold Real Gold in Your Retirement Account (2026)

Every gold IRA is self-directed. Our top pick sets it up with you.

What Is a Self-Directed Gold IRA?

A self-directed IRA is an IRA whose custodian allows "alternative" assets the big brokerages usually don't, such as physical precious metals, real estate, or private investments. A self-directed gold IRA is simply a self-directed IRA that holds IRS-approved gold (and often silver, platinum, or palladium). In practice, every physical gold IRA is self-directed; the terms are used interchangeably.

It can be a traditional, Roth, SEP, or SIMPLE IRA. The tax rules are the same as any other IRA of that type. What changes is who holds the account and where the assets sit.

The Three Parties Involved

PartyRoleExamples
CustodianHolds the IRA, keeps records, reports to the IRS, pays for purchases on your directionEquity Trust, STRATA Trust, GoldStar Trust
Dealer (gold IRA company)Sells the metal, helps with paperwork, quotes pricesAugusta Precious Metals, Noble Gold
DepositoryStores and insures the metalDelaware Depository, IDS (Delaware and Texas)

Most people deal mainly with the dealer, who coordinates the custodian and depository. See best gold IRA custodians and gold IRA storage.

IRS Rules for Metals in a Self-Directed IRA

Under Internal Revenue Code section 408(m), buying a "collectible" in an IRA is treated as a taxable distribution. Metals and coins are collectibles, with specific exceptions:

The IRS states that buying a non-qualifying collectible is taxed as ordinary income, and the 10% additional tax may apply if you're under 59½. See IRA-approved gold and gold IRA rules.

The Checkbook IRA Trap

Some promoters sell a "checkbook IRA": your IRA owns an LLC, you control the LLC's bank account, and you keep the metal at home. The U.S. Tax Court rejected this in McNulty v. Commissioner (2021). An IRA-owned LLC bought American Eagle coins that the owner kept in a home safe; the court treated them as taxable distributions of $374,000 in 2015 and $37,380 in 2016 and upheld accuracy penalties, noting that "personal control over the IRA assets by the IRA owner is against the very nature of an IRA." See gold IRA home storage.

How to Open a Self-Directed Gold IRA

  1. Choose a gold IRA company and request its free kit.
  2. Open the self-directed IRA with the company's partner custodian (you can often choose another).
  3. Fund it by direct transfer from an IRA or direct rollover from a 401(k), 403(b), 457(b), or TSP.
  4. Approve a written quote for IRS-eligible metals.
  5. Metals ship to the depository in your account's name.
