What Is a Gold IRA?
A gold IRA is a self-directed individual retirement account that holds physical, IRS-approved gold, silver, and in some cases platinum or palladium, instead of only stocks and funds. It follows the same tax rules as a traditional or Roth IRA. The metals must be held by an approved custodian and stored in an approved depository; you can't keep them at home. Most people fund a gold IRA by transferring or rolling over money from an existing IRA, 401(k), 403(b), 457(b), or TSP.

Gold IRA or Gold at Home?
You can also buy gold and silver coins outright and keep them yourself. That gives you direct possession but no tax advantages, and you handle storage and insurance. A gold IRA keeps the tax benefits of a retirement account, but the metals must stay at an approved depository until you take a distribution. Many people use both: an IRA for retirement savings and a smaller amount of coins at home. Both Augusta and Noble Gold sell metals for home delivery as well as for IRAs. Noble Gold's guide to protecting savings with gold and silver covers the non-IRA side.
Moving Money From an Existing Retirement Account
Most gold IRAs are funded with money that's already saved for retirement. The common sources are a traditional or Roth IRA, a 401(k) or 403(b) from a former employer, a government 457(b), or the federal TSP. The safest method is a direct transfer or direct rollover, where your old plan sends the money straight to the new custodian. That avoids the 60-day deadline, withholding, and the risk of an accidental taxable distribution. Our gold IRA rollover guide covers each account type step by step.

Three Things to Know Before You Call Any Company
- Ask for the spread in writing. The markup on coins and bars is usually your largest cost.
- Be careful with "free" metals. Bonuses are often paid for through higher prices elsewhere.
- Use a direct rollover. Moving money custodian to custodian avoids the 60-day deadline and withholding.
