A Gold IRA in One Paragraph

A gold IRA is a self-directed individual retirement account that holds physical gold, and often silver, platinum, or palladium, instead of only stocks, bonds, and funds. It follows the same tax rules as a traditional or Roth IRA. The difference is what's inside: real coins and bars that meet IRS purity standards, held by an approved custodian and stored in an approved depository. You can't keep the metals at home while they're in the IRA.

How a Gold IRA Works

Four parties are involved, and knowing who does what makes the whole process easier to follow:

PartyRoleExample
YouOwn the account and decide what to buy—
Dealer (gold IRA company)Sells the metals, guides setup and fundingAugusta Precious Metals, Noble Gold
CustodianAdministers the IRA, keeps records, reports to the IRSEquity Trust and similar trust companies
DepositoryStores and insures the metalsDelaware Depository, International Depository Services

In practice, the dealer coordinates almost everything. You complete an application, the money moves from your current account to the new custodian, you choose metals, and the dealer ships them to the depository. Learn more about gold IRA custodians and gold IRA storage.

Types of Gold IRAs

Traditional Gold IRA

Contributions may be tax-deductible and growth is tax-deferred. Withdrawals are taxed as ordinary income, and required minimum distributions begin at age 73. Most 401(k), 403(b), 457(b), and TSP rollovers land in a traditional gold IRA.

Roth Gold IRA

Contributions are made with after-tax money. Qualified withdrawals are tax-free, and there are no RMDs for the original owner. See our Roth gold IRA guide.

SEP Gold IRA

For self-employed people and small-business owners. Contribution limits are much higher: up to 25% of compensation, capped at $72,000 for 2026. See our SEP gold IRA guide.

What Can a Gold IRA Hold?

Only bullion that meets IRS fineness standards: generally 99.5% pure for gold, 99.9% for silver, and 99.95% for platinum and palladium. The American Gold Eagle is allowed by law despite being 91.67% gold. Popular choices include American Eagles, American Gold Buffalos, Canadian Maple Leafs, and bars from approved refiners. Most collectible and rare coins are not allowed. See the full list in IRS-approved gold for IRAs.

How to Fund a Gold IRA

Avoid taking a check made out to you. An indirect rollover must be completed within 60 days, employer plans withhold 20% for taxes, and you can only do one indirect IRA-to-IRA rollover in any 12-month period.

What Does a Gold IRA Cost?

Expect a one-time setup fee, an annual custodian fee, an annual storage fee, and the spread on the metals you buy. Ongoing fees commonly total $200 to $300 a year. The spread is usually the biggest cost and varies by product. Our gold IRA fees guide breaks it all down.

Why People Choose a Gold IRA

The Trade-Offs

Read the full gold IRA pros and cons before deciding. Many planners suggest holding precious metals as one part of a diversified portfolio rather than all of it.

A Brief History of Gold IRAs

For years, IRAs couldn't hold gold bullion. The Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997 changed that by allowing certain gold, silver, platinum, and palladium bullion meeting minimum fineness standards, as long as a trustee holds it. That's when self-directed precious metals IRAs became widely available.

Who Should Consider a Gold IRA?

A gold IRA tends to suit people who already have meaningful retirement savings, want part of it in a physical asset, are comfortable with long holding periods, and understand the costs. It's usually a poor fit for very small balances, where flat fees take too big a share, or for anyone who needs the money soon.
