Where Gold IRA Metals Are Stored

Gold IRA metals must be held by the IRA's trustee or custodian, which in practice means an approved, insured depository. The dealer ships your coins and bars there after purchase, and the custodian records them as IRA assets. You can visit some depositories by appointment, but you can't take IRA metals home without taking a distribution.

Segregated vs Commingled Storage

Commingled (Non-Segregated)Segregated
How it worksYour metals are stored with identical items from other clientsYour exact coins and bars are kept apart and labeled
What you get backThe same type and quantityThe exact items you bought

Noble Gold reports segregated storage as standard on its accounts. Augusta's FAQ says metals are held fully allocated and off the depository's balance sheet, meaning the depository's creditors have no claim to them. Ask either company which option you're getting and its exact cost.

What Gold IRA Storage Costs

Storage is typically a flat annual fee of roughly $100 to $150, sometimes bundled with the custodian fee. Industry figures:

CompanyReported Storage / Ongoing Fees
Augusta Precious MetalsAbout $100 storage; ~$225/yr total (zero-fee promo for qualifying accounts)
Noble Gold Investments$150 storage; $275/yr total, segregated standard

Is My Gold Insured?

Major depositories carry insurance through specialist underwriters. Ask your custodian or depository for the insurer, coverage type, and whether coverage is per-client or facility-wide. Also ask about audits and how often holdings are reconciled.

Questions to Ask About Storage

  1. Which depository will hold my metals, and where is it?
  2. Is storage segregated or commingled, and what does each cost?
  3. Who is the insurer, and what does the policy cover?
  4. How often are holdings audited and reconciled?
  5. Can I visit or request an inspection, and is there a fee?
  6. Can I move my metals to another depository later?

What Happens When You Take a Distribution

When you take money out, you have two choices. For a cash distribution, the custodian directs the sale of metals and pays you the proceeds, minus any withholding you choose. For an in-kind distribution, the depository ships the metals to you, and they're taxed at their fair market value on the date of distribution. Either way, traditional IRA distributions are taxable income, and withdrawals before 59½ may carry a 10% penalty.

Can You Store a Gold IRA at Home?

No. The tax code's exception for IRA bullion requires the metals to be in the physical possession of the trustee. Some promoters sell "home storage" or "checkbook" gold IRAs using an LLC. In the 2021 Tax Court case McNulty v. Commissioner, an IRA owner who kept IRA-purchased coins at home was treated as having taken taxable distributions and faced penalties.

Red flag: any company promising you can keep IRA gold in your home safe. If you want metal at home, buy it outside your IRA with cash. Both Augusta and Noble Gold sell metals for home delivery, separate from IRA accounts.

Augusta's buyer-beware guide covers this and other pitches to avoid.
