Quick Verdict
Augusta Precious Metals and Goldco are two of the best-known gold IRA companies. For savers with $50,000 or more, we prefer Augusta for its education-first process, lifetime support, fee-waiver promotion, and clear stance against "free silver" pricing tactics. Goldco has a lower reported minimum and sells four metals. If you're under $50,000, we suggest comparing Goldco against our #2 pick, Noble Gold, which reports an even lower $20,000 minimum.

Minimums
Goldco's reported $25,000 minimum is half of Augusta's reported $50,000. If you're between $25,000 and $50,000, Augusta isn't available to you, and Goldco and Noble Gold ($20,000) are the natural comparison. If you're above $50,000, both are open to you and the decision comes down to costs and approach.
Fees and Pricing
Reported ongoing fees are close: Yahoo Finance lists about $225 a year for both companies' standard storage. Two differences matter more:
- Promotions. Goldco offers bonus silver on large purchases. Augusta offers zero gold IRA fees for up to 10 years for qualifying accounts. Fee waivers are simple to value; bonus metal requires comparing total spreads.
- Price transparency. GOBankingRates notes Goldco doesn't disclose dealer markups. Fortune notes Augusta doesn't post all prices online either. Ask both for written quotes on identical products.
Free Silver vs Fee Waiver
This is the clearest philosophical difference. Goldco advertises free silver worth up to 5% to 10% of qualifying purchases. Augusta argues that bonus silver offers often raise your total cost through wider markups, and it publishes a report on "free silver". Neither approach is automatically better. The fair test is to compare the total melt value of metal you receive per dollar. See our free silver explainer.
Metals Offered
Goldco sells all four IRA-eligible metals; Augusta sells gold and silver only. For most gold IRA buyers, gold and silver are enough. If you want platinum or palladium, compare Goldco with Noble Gold, which also sells all four.
Sales Experience
Augusta's model is learn first, then talk, then decide. You can read its kit before any call, and the company says its educators are salaried rather than commission-based. Yahoo Finance notes that downloading Goldco's guide leads to a sales call. Goldco is also known for celebrity endorsements, which Augusta cautions can be built into pricing.
Reputation
Both hold A+ BBB ratings. GOBankingRates reports Goldco also holds a AAA rating from the Business Consumer Alliance. Augusta cites Money magazine's Best Overall Gold IRA Company award for 2022–2026 and Investopedia's Most Transparent recognition. Both have large numbers of positive reviews.

Account Types and Rollovers
Both companies handle traditional, Roth, and SEP IRAs and rollovers from 401(k), 403(b), and similar plans. Augusta says its staff handle most of the paperwork and coordinate with your custodian. Goldco offers rollover specialists. See our 401(k) rollover guide for how the process works.
