The Rule in One Line

An IRA can hold silver bullion that's at least 99.9% pure, made by a national mint or an approved refiner, and held by the IRA's custodian at an approved depository. Most collectible coins and older 90% silver coins don't qualify.

Who Makes IRA-Eligible Silver Bars?

Bars generally need to come from a national government mint or a refiner accredited by a recognized exchange or market body, such as those approved for regulated futures delivery. Well-known refiners and mints, including the Royal Canadian Mint, PAMP, and Valcambi, produce bars that custodians routinely accept. Ask your dealer for the refiner name and confirm it with your custodian before buying.

Storage and Weight

Silver is far bulkier than gold for the same value. When the gold-to-silver price ratio is around 80, a given dollar amount of silver weighs about 80 times as much as the same dollar amount of gold. That's why some depositories price silver storage differently. Ask whether your storage fee is based on value, weight, or a flat rate.

Taking Silver Out of Your IRA

You can take a distribution as cash (the metal is sold) or in kind (the silver is shipped to you). In-kind distributions are taxed at fair market value on the distribution date for traditional IRAs. Because individual silver coins are worth relatively little, silver makes it easy to take small in-kind distributions, which some people find handy for required minimum distributions.

Coins vs Bars for Silver

Silver coins are easy to recognize and sell a few at a time, but their premium is often a large share of the metal's value. Larger bars (10 oz, 100 oz) usually cost less per ounce but are less flexible when you take distributions. A mix of both is common.
