Gold in a 401(k): Can Your Retirement Plan Actually Hold Gold? (2026)

Want physical gold for your 401(k) money? Our top pick explains the rollover.

The Short Answer

Usually not as physical gold. A 401(k) can only hold the investments your employer's plan offers, and most plan menus are mutual funds and target-date funds. Some plans offer a gold or precious metals fund, or a brokerage window where you can buy a gold ETF. To own physical gold with 401(k) money, people typically roll the money into a self-directed gold IRA.

Why 401(k) Plans Rarely Hold Physical Gold

Federal tax law treats metals and coins as "collectibles" in individually directed retirement accounts, and that rule covers self-directed accounts in 401(a) plans, which include 401(k)s, as well as IRAs. Beyond that, employers choose a limited menu of funds. Fidelity, one of the largest plan administrators, says precious metals are generally not eligible in its retirement accounts other than IRAs.

There's been policy movement: an August 2025 executive order directed regulators to open 401(k) plans to "alternative assets," including commodities, and the Labor Department proposed related rules in March 2026. None of that requires your plan to offer gold, so check your plan's current menu.

Moving 401(k) Money Into Gold

If You've Left the Employer

You can roll an old 401(k) into a gold IRA at any age. Use a direct rollover so the money goes plan-to-custodian with no withholding or 60-day deadline. Step-by-step: 401(k) to gold IRA rollover.

If You Still Work There

Many plans allow an in-service rollover once you reach age 59½. IRS rules let elective deferrals be paid out at 59½, but whether your plan allows it depends on the plan's terms. Ask your plan administrator. You can usually move only part of the balance and keep contributing.
