Gold IRA Taxes and RMDs: How the IRS Treats Your Retirement Gold (2026)

The Big Picture

A gold IRA is taxed like any other IRA. What's inside, physical metal rather than stocks, doesn't change the tax rules, as long as the metals are IRA-eligible and held by an approved custodian. The tax advantage is significant: gold held outside an IRA can be taxed at the collectibles rate when sold.

Gold Inside vs Outside an IRA

Outside a retirement account, the IRS treats physical gold and silver as collectibles. Long-term gains on collectibles are taxed at a maximum federal rate of 28%, higher than the usual long-term capital gains rates for stocks. Inside an IRA, gains aren't taxed as they happen; a traditional IRA is taxed as ordinary income on withdrawal, and a Roth IRA can be tax-free.

Required Minimum Distributions

Under the SECURE 2.0 Act, RMDs from traditional IRAs generally begin at age 73 for people born from 1951 through 1959, and at age 75 for people born in 1960 or later. Roth IRAs have no RMDs for the original owner.

How RMDs Work With Physical Metal

RMD Planning Tip

If most of your IRA is in metal, a price drop near year-end can force you to sell more ounces to meet the RMD. Holding some cash in the IRA, or a mix of smaller coins, makes RMDs easier.

In-Kind Distributions

You can take coins or bars out of your IRA rather than cash. For a traditional IRA, the metal's fair market value on the distribution date is taxable income, and that value becomes your cost basis for any later sale. If you later sell the metal outside the IRA at a gain, that gain may be taxed at the collectibles rate.

Early Withdrawals

Withdrawals before 59½ are generally subject to a 10% additional tax on top of income tax, unless an exception applies (for example, disability, certain medical expenses, or substantially equal periodic payments). Rolling a governmental 457(b) into an IRA gives up that plan's penalty-free access after leaving your job; see 457(b) to gold IRA.

Are Gold IRA Fees Tax Deductible?

For most individual investors, no. Custodian and storage fees aren't deductible under current law. Paying them from outside the IRA keeps more money invested, if your custodian allows it.

Roth Conversions With Gold

You can convert a traditional gold IRA to a Roth, either as cash or in kind. The converted value is taxable income that year. Some people convert after a price drop so less tax is due on the same ounces. See Roth gold IRA.

Inherited Gold IRAs

Most non-spouse beneficiaries must empty an inherited IRA within 10 years under current rules. Spouses usually have more options. Heirs can sell the metal or take it in kind, with traditional IRA distributions taxed as income.
